Preparing for the SAT Vocabulary

The SAT vocabulary is the most daunting part of the SAT for some students. Although some students have very good vocabularies, and do not have a problem with the vocabulary section of the SAT, other students really struggle. Their are several ways for students who struggle with vocabulary to prepare for the SAT.
  1. One strategy to prepare for the SAT vocabulary section is by making flash cards with the vocabulary word on one side and the definition on the other. If you learn 10 vocabulary words a day, you will have learned 300 new words in one month. So, with this strategy all you need to do is find an SAT word list and start memorizing a few words every night. In a few months you will have a very rich vocabulary.
  2. The second SAT strategy, is for students who are less visual and are more auditory. Students who learn better by hearing things, may be able to learn better by listening to SAT words and definitions. SAT vocabulary cds can be purchased online. Just load these cds on to your ipod, and by listening to them instead of your favorite music you can learn a lot of words pretty easily. Or, if you do not want to purchase the cds, another option is to make your own recordings. Simply find a SAT word list and then record yourself saying the words and definitions, either on your computer or on a recorder.
  3. The third way to prepare for the SAT section is by reading. Students who read lots of books tend to have much richer vocabularies than those who don’t. When reading a book, highlight words you don’t know and then get out a dictionary and look up the definitions. This way you will see how the word is used in a sentence and you will be able to learn the definition more easily.

The SAT section of the SAT may seem daunting, but with a little study time every night you can learn a thousand words in no time. Just whatever you do, don’t wait until the week before you take the SAT to start studying the SAT vocabulary.
