What is a good SAT Score?

After a student has taken the SAT, he or she will recieve a score ranging from 0 throught 2400. There is no true definition for a good SAT score, because each student may be trying to achieve a different score depending on what college he or she want to get into. The average SAT score is in the mid 1500’s. However, for a student who wishes to attend a top rate college, the 1500 score range is not a very good score. The average SAT score of students at the most prestigious colleges is well above 2,000.

  1. So, if you are planning on attending an average college that is not very prestigious, then a good SAT score is in the 1600-1700 range. Basically just average.

  2. If you are planning on attending a more prestigious school, then a good SAT score is in the 1800-2000 range.

  3. If you are planning on attending a very prestigious school, then a good SAT score is definately above 2,000.

But remember, SAT scores are only part of the story for attending a college. Some people are just not good test takers, and do poorly on the SAT, yet still get into very prestigious colleges. However, a good SAT score can always be a nice extra boost for getting into the college of your dreams.

At the collegeboard official website find the college you want to get into, and you can usually find the average SAT scores for that college. So, that score range will be your “good SAT score”.

And, if you really don’t do well on the SAT, don’t be to discouraged. These days, some colleges are not even requiring SAT scores for applications.
